Red Oak Recovery® Enlists Prominent Truama Expert for Intensive Staff Training and Certification

Trauma issues are often part of clients’ histories at Red Oak Recovery®, an innovative addiction treatment program for young adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues. For this reason, the entire clinical team and other key staff at Red Oak Recovery® recently underwent intensive trauma training with established trauma expert Judy Crane, LMHC, CAP, ICADC, CSAT-R.

Crane is the founder and former CEO of one of the leading trauma and addiction treatment centers. She later founded Spirit2Spirit to teach clinicians how to work with trauma survivors. After completing her module-based course, clinicians earn the distinction of Certified Trauma Therapist (CTT).

“One hundred percent of the female clients who undergo treatment at Red Oak have experienced trauma in their past, as do the majority of our male clients,” said Jack Kline, MS, LPCS, LCAS, CCS, Chief Executive Officer of Red Oak Recovery®. “Additionally, when our clients have multiple relapses and multiple treatment experiences, that is often due to unresolved trauma.”

“We experience trauma when we cannot effectively process what happens to us, whether on an emotional, mental, spiritual, or physical level,” explains Heather Schnoebelen, MA, LPC, LCAS, CCS-I, Executive Clinical Director of Red Oak. “All too often, drugs and alcohol are used to numb the hurt and confusion young adults carry with them, and for recovery to be successful, they have to be able to address the traumas that fueled their addiction and not just the substance abuse itself.”

Identifying and Increasing Motivation


In addiction therapy, the Stages of Change model has become an invaluable tool. Many addicts find themselves in therapy because of an intervention and not because they have chosen to make a change. Using the model, a therapist can assess the degree of motivation and start to build upon it.

Assessing Readiness to Change


There are generally six recognized Stages of Change:

  1. In pre-contemplation, a person may be aware of addiction’s downside but has no intention to change. 
  2. In contemplation, he or she is open to change, but without the necessary confidence or motivation to make a change. 
  3. In preparation, the person is willing to change and anticipates the benefits of change. 
  4. In the action stage, the individual gathers insight and skills to effect the change. 
  5. In maintenance, a person achieves awareness and self-control, which enable him to focus on relapse prevention. 
  6. In termination, the individual successfully lives a healthy and meaningful lifestyle. 

Relapse Is Part of the Process


Progression through the stages is not steady, and relapse may occur at any point. The addiction therapist adjusts treatment to encourage motivation at each phase.

Keep The Winter Blues At Bay

It’s hard to be upbeat in winter when days are short, cold, and overcast. Sometimes you just want to stay in your pajamas and avoid going out. You’ve got the winter blues, and it’s going to take some self-discipline and recovery motivation to shake them off.

Being Active Is Key 


You know from rehab and recovery therapy that filling your time with new interests and activities is important to staying on track. Being active is just as important when you have the winter blues. So, review your recovery goals, add some extra incentives, and set about losing the winter blues.

Goal #1: Keep to a structured schedule. Know ahead of time when you will go to bed, when you will rise, and when you will have your meals. Stick to your schedule and fill in extra slots with support meetings, coffee with a friend, or an hour to read a good book or write in a journal.

Goal #2: Take care of yourself. You may feel like lounging all day in your grubby sweats, but opt instead for the comfort of casual dress. Don’t neglect your personal hygiene, exercise, and meditation routines. This might be the time to treat yourself to something special—a day at the spa or a trip to a museum or art gallery.

Goal #3: Get outside and do something. Being outdoors is invigorating and gives you much-needed vitamin D. Build a snowman, shovel a neighbor’s driveway, or just go for a walk. Being outdoors and interacting with people is good for your body, mind, and soul.
